Everything will be recorded in the Kuala Besut by-election by the Election Commission, starting with this morning's nomination till polling on July 24.
"We want to make the Kuala Besut by-election a model for managing an election so we are recording all proceedings from the nomination time, voting, to the counting," said EC vice-chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar at Besut Rakan Muda Complex earlier today.
He said the recordings would be used for training EC staff as well as for future reference.
Wan Ahmad, however, did not mention if it would also be used as its defence against attacks by disgruntled parties after the election is over.
The EC decision to record proceedings comes after it had rejected a suggestion by the Communication and Multmedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek to telecast live the vote counting on July 24.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, said this was because during the vote counting, the election agents of the contesting parties would be present in the vote counting room.
"The EC is an independent body and if RTM wants to record the vote counting process and the EC allows this, it cannot reject the applications from others, if there are.
"The EC has decided that any recording of the vote counting process should be managed by the EC itself and not by other parties,” he had said
Ahmad Shabeery had mooted the idea to enable the public to see that the election was carried out in a fair and transparent manner.
"RTM is a government media and should be allowed to be in the vote counting room until the results are announced," he had said.
Wan Ahmad also advised the candidates and party members to be civilised during the campaigning period and not to put up any inappropriate models or posters during the campaign.
"I saw it before where they made a huge cut-out of a man's underwear during the recent general election. It was not nice," he said.
In the Kuala Besut by election, civil engineer Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, 37, is defending the seat for BN while Azlan Yusof, 48, of PAS is his opponent. Polling has been set for July 24 after 12 days of campaigning. - July 12, 2013.
