The unmarried 61-year-old coffee shop worker was hit by a blunt object, believed to be a padlock, by his Indonesian girlfriend's boyfriend.
The victim and the Indonesian woman apparently enjoyed a clandestine relationship and that the Indonesian would visit him every now and then as he paid her for sex.
In the 2pm incident on Saturday, the Indonesian woman went to the victim's work place in Lintang Angsana, Bandar Baru Air Itam. Police sources revealed the woman's boyfriend had tailed her and caught the woman in a compromising position with the senior citizen in a room on the second floor of the coffee shop.
A heated exchange of words ensued, followed by a scuffle which resulted the suspect to hit the victim using a heavy object causing the victim to pass out due to loss of blood.
Neighbours who heard the commotion contacted the police who arrived at the scene and found the unconscious victim lying in a pool of blood on a mattress and a padlock covered with blood.
The victim's wallet, containing RM1,200 in cash, identification card and driving license, were missing.
The 30-year-old Indonesian woman, a runaway maid, who lived in the country without documentation for the past ten years, was picked up by police on Saturday night for questioning.
State CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Kesah said the suspect, in his 30s, has been detained and is investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for armed robbery and assault.
"The victim who is in a critical condition at the neurology ward in Penang Hospital received eight stitches on his head," said Mazlan.
