GEORGE TOWN, May 23 — Police will take action against the group of men who disrupted a candlelight vigil in Esplanade last night that resulted in a scuffle, injuring a reporter and an activist.

George Town district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said they have identified the men involved and that they would take swift action against the culprits.

The police will investigate the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

At the same time, Gan pointed out that the vigil was an illegal gathering as it was held without a police permit which is against Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act.

“The public should not take part in illegal gatherings like this,” he said.

The candlelight vigil was organised by Penang Suaram in solidarity of Adam Adli Abd Rahim who has since been charged for sedition.

As the group was dispersing last night, a group of men on motorcycles came to disrupt it and tried to run down activist Sean Ho.

Two reporters went to assist Ho and one of them, Oriental Daily’s Ooi Choon Nam was injured in the altercation.

The police later came to break up the fight but no arrests were made.

Ooi and Ho lodged police reports over the incident around midnight.
